A couple of little delicious tidbits from two different obits in today's N&O:

  1. When asked, "What vodka is best, Polish or Russian?" she would resolutely answer "Polish!" and proceed to tell of how she learned this fact while on a ship in the North Atlantic with an all-Polish crew. They sailed in bad weather and—being the only passenger who did not get seasick—she had the opportunity to spend the entire trip sampling vodka with the crew.

  2. Although he received many awards and much recognition, he considered himself "one of God's little nobodies."

While listening to a bunch of podcasts, I did some food prep this afternoon for tonight's dinner—and beyond—including:

  • Slicing some scallions
  • Dicing some pineapple
  • Dicing a red bell paper
  • Food processing some Wisconsin sharp cheddar cheese (from Robert's trip to Wisconsin in December)
  • Dicing tomatoes
  • Boiling and peeling shrimp
  • Cleaning and lightly tearing a head of lettuce

I ran to Irregardless to get a bottle of their famous Lemon Tahini Dressing.

Lemon Tahini Dressing: $5.50 + sales tax

Irregardless’ house dressing for over a quarter of a century. Made right here in our restaurant from the finest and freshest ingredients: Tahini (toasted sesame butter), lemon juice, soy sauce, celery, bell pepper, onion, salt and pepper.

Robert arrived right at 6:00 and we had Shrimp Cocktail along with our salad with the aforementioned dressing on it. It was the deal.

I've never heard of Doris Lessing before, but I like her irreverence:

Nobel literature laureate Doris Lessing, who greeted news of her victory with the words, "I couldn't care less," received her prize Wednesday night at a champagne reception in London.

The 88-year-old writer was still not entirely overwhelmed by the honor.

"There isn't anywhere to go from here, is there?" she said, before thinking of one more accolade: "I could receive a pat on the head from the pope."

I could definitely see her making this kind of acceptance speech. [Audio alert: Mind your speaker volume, one bad word used.]

Dancing was fun enough tonight. I opted out of learning that new dance I stopped halfway through last week's lesson on. I'm not sure why. I don't hate the dance, at least I don't think I do.

Robert wasn't feeling well, so we left a little early. I had a wonderful last two-step with Rick before leaving. Thanks for hanging in there for that, my sweet.
